Here at Green Flame, we’re always interested in greener energy options in an effort to make our homes more sustainable and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas production.  So here, we outline the 5 greener energy options for consideration if you’re thinking of making your home more energy efficient and reduce carbon emission.

What is green energy anyway?

Renewable energy is the term used to describe the power generated from natural resources, for example the sun, the wind, water and biomass  They’re called ‘renewable’ because the source of the energy generated is naturally replenished.. 

Renewable energy is often called ‘green energy’ because the process of energy generation doesn’t give off greenhouse gases – a major contribution to global climate change.

Fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, and gas have historically been used to heat our homes, but science now tells us that their emissions are a key contributor to climate change.  And that’s a very bad thing indeed!

So, we’re looking here are harnessing the power of naturally replenishing energy sources and incorporating them into our homes.

  1. Solar Power

Solar power harnesses the power of the sun’s rays by absorbing sunlight into photovoltaic panels installed on the roof.  The resultant electricity that’s produced is stored in batteries and can be used to heat your home with no greenhouse gas emissions.  You can use the power created when you need it, and if your panels produce more than you require, the excess can be sold to the National Grid as part of the as part of the Government’s Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

  1. Wind Energy

We’re all familiar with the massive wind farms dotted all around the English countryside, but there are domestic products available too!  They work in the same way – by generating electricity by the wind turning the blades, which in turn drives the internal turbine to create power. Small wind turbines are either free-standing poles or  can be installed directly on your house. Again, any surplus energy can be sold to the National Grid in the same way as excess solar power.

  1. Biomass Systems

These systems burn organic matter, such as wood chips, pellets or small logs to provide heating and hot water. The carbon emission is minimal because they only emit the same amount of carbon that the tree itself absorbs over its lifetime.  They’re super economic, super clean and produce very little waste compared to a coal, gas or log burner.

  1. Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps are becoming more popular as a renewable energy system.  They work by using the heat from the air outside, channelling it through a compressor to heat your home and produce hot water.

Ground Source heat pumps work in a similar way but the heat source comes from the ground rather than the air.  The pipework required is laid under the ground, but the process of generating heat is similar to air source pumps

  1. Hydroelectric systems

Hydroelectric systems harness the power of downhill water flow. They don’t have to be huge like Dinorwig in Snowdonia National Park, but if you live by a river with a water downfall of over 1m, you could benefit from a small scale hydroelectric system for your home.
